I stood puzzled as I strained to discern the
outline of a distant bird singing in the morning sunlight. I heard it clearly
but was ignorant to its identity.
These moments humble me as I realize how much
there is to learn about the world of sound around me. They also excite me,
knowing that the journey of discovery lays ahead.
This excitement to learn about the world around me lead me to my career as a
wildlife ecologist and to specialize in the identification of bird songs and
calls. Along the way I came to wonder about the rest of the sounds I heard. I
knew of the myriad of creatures that made the sounds, from bats to frogs to
katydids, but how to identify them?
I’m inspired to head out on a journey to better understand the sounds of
nature and the ecology of the creatures that make those sounds. Not only do I
want to learn more, but I also want to share this appreciation and excitement with you and
inspire you to do the same.
Finding information on how to interpret the sound is a challenge. Let me dive deep through and synthesize the literature to find new discoveries, tips, and suggestions to help you on your journey of discovery.
